Why Having It All May Not Actually Exist

When we ask about the “greatest struggle of parenthood,” one of the most common answers we get from parents is learning to juggle. Balancing career, friends, family, fitness and sleep can seem impossible and the truth is, it actually might be.

Looking at (and judging) successful parents who appear to have the hustle down pat—running a family, running a business—can be deceiving. In fact, Randi Zuckerberg (yes, sister to Facebook founder Mark) explains in one concise tweet that having it all is not always a reality, but a dilemma.

“The entrepreneur’s dilemma: Maintaining friendships. Building a great company. Spending time w/ family. Staying fit. Getting sleep.”

Zuckerberg doesn’t claim to have mastered the art of keeping all of the plates spinning, but she does offer one easy solution: “Pick 3.” Decide what three aspects are most important to you, your own idea of having it all, and lend them your focus.

As your Minis grow and your life evolves, those three may change and that’s OK. So stop being so hard on yourself. Even Oprah says, “You can have it all. You just can’t have it all at once.”
